Sedation Dentistry

Can you really relax on the Dentist's chair?

Does the thought of cleaning your teeth make your whole body tense with fear? Would you rather have a toothache suffering than step foot in the office of a dentist? You're not on your own. Some people are so paranoid about going to the dentist they choose not to be seen. Some want painless dental appointment.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Special oral sedation dentistry uses medication to help the patient relax during dental procedures, sedation dentistry uses medication. It is sometimes referred to as "sleep dentistry," even though it is not entirely accurate. Except for those under general anesthesia, patients are usually awake.

The levels of sedation used include:

  • Minimal Sedation - you are awake but relaxed.
  • Moderate Sedation (formerly called "conscious sedation") - you may slur your words.
  • Deep Sedation - you are on the edge of consciousness but can still be awakened.
  • General Anesthesia - you are completely unconscious.
