Laser Dentistry

What is Laser Dentistry?

This procedure uses a laser beam light to treat various dental conditions. It was introduced clinically to the dental practice back in 1989.

This treatment offers a more comfortable option in treating dental circumstances that involve the hard and soft tissue, unlike using a dental drill and other dental tools.

LASER stands for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. The instrument creates concentrated light energy that exits through a very narrow opening creating a beam of light that is reactive enough to remove or reshape any hard and soft tissues.

Lasers will increase the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and comfort of dental treatments. Laser dentistry has been licensed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a treatment option for several dental conditions.

It is worth noting that this is yet to be achieved by the American Dental Association (ADA), although they are optimistic about the field's prospects

What types of lasers are used?

Dental professionals, depending on the treatment, use either hard tissue or soft tissue lasers. If the treatment allows, some will use both types.

Lasers of hard tissue can slice through the surface of the tooth. By combining water and a specific mineral found in teeth, their wavelengths are absorbed. These lasers are most commonly used for preparing or shaping teeth for composite bonding, repairing worn-out dental fillings and removing a certain tooth structure.
